The presence of flavonol 3-O-glycosides can be considered a synapomorphy of American Spondias, and the presence of rhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside coupled with phylogenetic data is evidence for the separation of the two Atlantic forest Spondias species in a distinct clade.

Formaldehyde reacts with MBTH to form an azine, which is oxidized by a ferric chloride in acid media to form a blue cationic dye. Formaldehyde reacts with Purpald reagent in alkaline media to form a purple anion dye. The Nash reagent method relies on the reaction of formaldehyde with acetylacetone in acidified ammonium acetate to form a yellow product.
